How to change fuel pump and filter?

Have a 1973 el camino, the car stalls and doesnt sound like its gettting gasHow to change fuel pump and filter?
The filter is in the main line to the carb. I would start there. The pump is on the engine, its mechanical and is operated off the engine vs the newer style electric in the tank versions. How to change fuel pump and filter?
Start with your filter first, I've seen them mostly on the underbody, close to where the driver seat is but yours may be elsewhere. You can always pull off a fuel line from the output of the pump to see if it spits gas when it's being cranked. Have something to catch it, of course! Good luck!
You have a mechanical fuel pump that is mounted

on the engine. The fuel filter may be located in the

line between the pump, and the carburetor. It is

usually an in line filter, but depending upon the type

of carburetor you have, it could be in the carburetor

where your fuel line connects.

Since the removal of the pump is a bit involved for

most to tackle for the first time, I would suggest

that you do the following:

Purchase one of the low cost, electric, in-line

pumps. They come with a ring type mount so it

is easy to mount on the firewall, or fender splash

guard. The fuel pump pressure for these is in the

range of your mechanical pump, and works just

fine.

Hook the wire for power to a circuit that only

works when the ignition is turned on.

Disconnect the fuel line to the inlet of the mechanical

pump, and install it in the inlet of the electric pump.

Next disconnect the fuel line going to the carburetor

from the mechanical pump, and connect it to the

outlet on the electric pump.

Many times you will need some extra fittings, and

some rubber fuel line hose to make these connections.

To be on the safe side, plug the holes on the

mechanical pump just in case you find it is good, and

you want to go back to it. Leave it on the engine as it

is sealing the opening into the block.

The small electric pump looks about like some filters,

and costs less than one of the mechanical pumps. I

purchased one last year for just over $20.

When you turn the key to On, you should hear the

electric pump starting, and working to pull fuel into

it. It is a bit more noisy when it is dry, but quiets

when gas is pulled into it. When it quiets down you

will have the gas up to the carburetor so it is then

ready to start.

I have been running one of these small pumps in

a truck for the past thirteen years now.

What do i need to use or do to change a fuel filter on a '01 ford ranger, 2.5L, 4 cylinder?

I know where it is. But what tools do I need. I already got Sprayed in my face with gas once. How do I prevent the pressure build up also? What do i need to use or do to change a fuel filter on a '01 ford ranger, 2.5L, 4 cylinder?
There are many ways to purge the residual fuel pressure in the system. It's whatever suits your fancy. You can pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, and run the engine until it farts, and quits. Hope this helps. What do i need to use or do to change a fuel filter on a '01 ford ranger, 2.5L, 4 cylinder?
use some dynamite. best way to change the oil on a ford is to blow it up then buy a GMC truck
There are fuel filter tools that are available from a local parts house, kind of a scissor like devise with a circle type thing on each end. As far as releasing fuel pressure there is two things that you can try take fuel cap off or bleed out pressure from the fuel rail valve

  • How To Change A Fuel Filter?

On a 78 chevy caprice. V8 350 engine. I bought a fuel filter today.. it is a little tiny filter. pretty cute haha. but i was told that it was in the carburetor. but where in there? would i have to unscrew anything? or is it somewhere else? thanks in advanceHow To Change A Fuel Filter?
the fuel filter is in the front of the carb. Right where the fuel line goes into the carb., is a fitting with the fuel filter in it. ITS Not on the FRAME RAIL !!! Just unscrew the fitting and the filter is right their. How To Change A Fuel Filter?
On the front of the carburetor, a metal fuel line runs into it. The fuel line has the filter inside it where it enters the carburetor. There is a nut which attaches the fuel line onto the front of the carburetor. Be careful not to twist the fuel line while you loosen the nut. Once the nut is loose, the fuel line can be pulled off/out of the front of the carburetor. You should be able to see the rim of the filter. It can usually be removed with your finger. Some fuel may spill while you change the filter. Be careful about where it lands. Please do not do this with a lit cigarette.
its an inline filter, itll be on the frame between the gastank and the engine just follow the lines, and it will be there it should be a screwdrive or a 10mm good luck have fun

hi, first of i have never done this but bieng it under the car thats going to be one extra hard thing, any way, first thing you need to cut the fuel supply so it wont pour everywhere . if you have some slack in the fuel line you would need to put a 180 bend in the supply line and support it with a peg or some thin wire, then you would need pliers and press the clip on both sides and release the hose from one end if its a screw then unscrew, now some petrol is going to fall out , thats ok but if it doesnt stop then youv chocked the wrong side lool , any way then unscrew the house from the other side, and ur god to go u should have the filter in ur hands by know , and place the new filter with right side of the flow , but now put the fuel supply in first with it chocked , un chocke it after it is fixed in place as soon as you see petrol coming out from the other side chock it again with the peg, then put the other side in and check that both sides are secure and your ready for a road trip,. note: be care full not to smoke u will need a screw for an emergny to cut fuel line by screwing it in the hole with it bent all the way back, and a tight tie around the bent hose ether with thin twist wire , or clothes peg, good luck and dont smoke or use a lighter for light down there.

it is under the vehicle, and under high pressure, you have to release the pressure before you remove the filter or you will end up with gas in your face, if you have never done it and do not have the tool to remove the filter -take it to a shop, for your own safety , if you think you can do it, dont smoke while you try to remove it,

How do you change a fuel filter in a diesel Ford F-350 Super Duty?

Jiffy Lube wants like $65, i'm guessing it's got to be fairly easy to do. Does anyone know how to do it and can you fill me in?How do you change a fuel filter in a diesel Ford F-350 Super Duty?
The fuel filter is on top of the engine. Depending on the year model, it is either a screw on filter or a paper element inside a canister. If it is an older model, simply unscrew the old filter, fill the new one with fuel and screw it back on. If it's a newer model, it is located under a black cover on top of the engine that is held in place with a couple of nuts that will need to be removed. The filter housing has a 3'; diameter black plastic cap on it. Unscrew the cap, remove the old filter and replace with a new one. Fill housing to top with fuel and screw cap back on.

That's it.How do you change a fuel filter in a diesel Ford F-350 Super Duty?
When you buy the filter at the parts store the instructions come with it. I change mine every 10,000 miles because I use B20 bio diesel in my F350. The job is pretty easy, just messy.

How do you get it to release the filter? How do you change the fuel filter on a 1999 mazda truck w/ 3.0 litre engine?
that metal coupling is a safety strap i believe, that ford used for years. pull it out of the way and use the same extractor that you were on the other side, after that it should be a cake walk.

just unscrew the gas cap to relief the pressure, disconnect negative battery terminal, unscrew the top n bottom with a wrench then reverse process. How do you change the fuel filter on a 1994 saturn sl2?
Buy the filter, start the engine, remove the fuel pump fuse and let the car idle until it stops, get under the car, put a catch pan under the filter, and use tools to remove it. Reverse process.
you might need a special tool to remove it , pull out your fuel pump fuse and run your car until it stalls, this will relieve the pressure in the gas line then remove the filter and install. make sure the arrow on the filter goes the rite way. then plug back in the fuel pump fuse then turn key forward and wait till the pump stops then turn over engine

Look up your make year model and fuel filter on http://www.autozone.com and it will tell you where the filter is and how to install it.How to change fuel filter on 2005 f150?
It's on the frame rail close to rear of cab. Requires a spring lock release tool to remove. Napa, Auto Zone any store like that should have it. It's best to spray with wd40, let sit for a minute and blast mud and crud out with compressed air if you have it. Push tool in to release spring and then pull hose back off of filter. These can be a real bear sometimes. If it doesn't release try repeating above but strongly pushing fuel line ';towards'; filter and then quickly back. to release. How to change fuel filter on 2005 f150?
if the filter is not internal (in the gas tank), you will need the ford fuel line disconnecter, you can get that from any parts store, then shove it in the line, work it back and forth and get it off
also be careful not to break the fuel line because that would be a costly repair.

Is it safe to change a fuel filter on a 2005 grand am without relieving the pressure first? How hard is it?

It has a 6cyl. and also where is it located? Is it safe to change a fuel filter on a 2005 grand am without relieving the pressure first? How hard is it?
Grab a Hayne's manual. It will tell you where the fuel filter is and it'll tell you how to relieve the pressure as well. It's a $15 book...pick it up when you get the fuel filter. Besides, every person should have one for their vehicle...it's like a Bible in most cases.

Typically, relieveing the pressure is just a matter of a fuse or a switch, so it's not worth the gasoline spill to save 30 seconds of time.Is it safe to change a fuel filter on a 2005 grand am without relieving the pressure first? How hard is it?
I don't have this vehicle, but almost all newer vehicles have special retaining clips or quick connect fittings for the fuel lines. Therefore, you will have to get a Hayes or Chilton manual to figure out which special tool you need to remove the filter (every company seams to have a different set-up). Also, notice I said quick connect fittings, not quick disconnect fittings. They have a nasty ability to rust on the inside and collect dirt, which makes them particularly difficult to remove. Use lots of P%26amp;P (Penetrating oil %26amp; Persistance). The occasional swear word also helps, I find!

As far as pressure goes, you should always relieve the pressure first, but you will not harm the system if you don't. Just be prepared for a stream of gas to come out and clean up the spill immediately. Gasoline will burn the skin quite badly if it stays in contact with your skin for long.

To find the fuel filter, just follow the fuel line from the tank to the injectors. The fuel filter will be a cylindrical object in-line with the fuel line. Also be sure to install the new filter in the same orientation. They are normally stamped with an arrow indicating the direcion of fuel travel.

How much does it cost to change a fuel filter at a jiffylube location?
Depends on your car, some fuel filters are now in the fuel tank and the tank most be dropped to change it. Fuel injected cars have much larger filters and cost more to begin with. About $50.00 if your filter is outside the tank and well over $300.00 if you can find someplace to change the one in the tank.
just wondering how you put a drain plug in ';WRONG'; it only screws in one damn way. Any way about $40-$60 is the norm depending on the make of vehicle.
idk and I'm not going to find out

Depends on what kind of car you drive. Where is the filter located? Whats the cost of the filter? Some of these late model import filters are through the roof pricewise. Get the idea. The fuel filters for my Cadillacs DeVilles cost less than the ones on my daughters Saturn SUV. Go figure.
idk, but i always buy a K%26amp;N air filter for my vehicles. they seem pricey, but well worth it. they are 1 million mile filters with a cleaning sometimes required at 500,000 miles.
figure the filter is $10 to $12 so you can figure at least that much to have it put on.
    depends on location

ThanksCan anyone tell me how to change the fuel filter on a 94 volvo 850 2.3 turbo wagon?
The fuel filter is on the under the passenger side of the car, in front of the rear wheel.

It is bolted to the under body of the car with a large clamp.

There are two hoses that attach to it.

One 12mm bolt that holds the clamp.

To take each hose off the car, you will need a large screw driver to slide the slip collar back which will release the tension so the hose will slide off of the filter (very easy to do). But don't pry at the hose, pry at the slip collar.

To install, point the arrow of the filter to the front of the car and slide on the hoses.( with the hoses all the way on, tug on them to make sure they are on all the way).

Good luck and be care full, gas is flammable.

If I were you and in your situation, I would definitely take the car in to a mechanic. It might take a little more to be fixed, but most manufacturers and safety experts recommend that you take it in for something like that. A friend of mine did his by himself and wound up putting it on the wrong way. I disagree with the answerer who said that you should have learned to do this stuff before driving the car because while you should know how to change your own oil and flat tires, a fuel filter should be left to someone who has been trained on how to do it. What I would recommend as far as the mechanic, go to the Nissan dealership in your area. They know your car. Don't take it to a quick lube shop or places like that. My fiancee took her car to a quick lube shop to get the transmission fluid replaced and we wound up having to have the car towed to another shop to have the problems they caused repaired. Be careful and good luck. How do you change the fuel filter in a 2002 nissan altima?
Unless you want to mess with gas take it in. Any oil changing place should be able to do it.
Read your owners manual.... That is the fastest way to learn about your car. You should already have learned how to do that stuff before you started DRIVING the car !!!
LOL That is not a easy thing to do i can tell you that much, i suggest taking it to a mechanic and getting it done! and when u do dont just go to one mechanic, go around to a lot of em and see which one is the cheapest ok?

  • How to change fuel filter 2006 altima?

The filter should be mounted on the firewall or the inside fender and is golden in color with a line going into the bottom and out the top. These lines can be identified as they are held to the filter by ';banjo bolts';. Basically, these are bolts that go thru the end of the fuel line which is aprox. 1/4'; thick. The fuel passes into this area and then into the bolt itself which has holes for this, the out the bolt into the fuel filter, or out of the filter into the line. Fairly strait forward repair. The filter is round, say 2'; in diameter, and approx. 4'; long held to the body by a round clamp not unlike the clamp that holds an old style ignition coil. A small bolt tightens this clamp about 1/2 way along the clamp.

Hi, I just did this job yesterday on my truck. If your vehicle is fuel injected it is instant. Fuel injected cars run with high pressure and as soon as you turn the key to on, it will pressurize the lines with gas. If your car is older and has a mechanical fuel pump, you will have to crank the engine for while to get all the air out of the lines, but not much more than a minute or two.How Long Does It Take to Get Air Out of Lines After Changing Fuel Filter?
What he said, just leave the ignition on but not started 30 seconds, check under where you repaired just in case. Then start her up.

You will need a special tool though, Goto a parts store and ask for a fuel filter removal tool. They make plastic ones, but I prefer the one that looks like scissors as it 4 sizes on it. Basically, look at those photos and you will see the a';bell'; at the end of each line. You need to put this tool around the stem of the filter and wiggle it into the bell, then push forward (up against the filter) as you are pushing the tool into the bell, then pull the line off. Sounds hard but quite easy, slide the tool back with the bell end of the hose.

    Do that for both ends!

As for putting it back on, be sure no orings slipped out. and just (without the tool) slide the hoses back on until you here them click, pull back just to make sure its sealed.

When you first release the line, go slowly as pressure will be built up in the line. let that blead off and then pull it off the rest of the way.

ANother way to relieve the pressure would be to look for the ';shrader'; valve (looks like the valve on your tire you put air into) on your motor, its the fuel rail that runs to your injectors.

Remove the cap and push in on the vale while keeping your face away. that will relieve the pressure in the gas line.

    Hope this info helps

How important is fuel filter change?

there is no way for an ordinary guy to know how durty or clean is the gasoline we pump from the gas station into our gas tank

we pressume it is a good quality, is it?How important is fuel filter change?
AL fuels sold in the USA have to meet minimum requirement so gas stations don't sell bad gas. (Another example of one of those ';ridiculous government regulations.) Most stations get their fuel at the same place. The difference is the additive package that is put into the tank before the tanker gets to the fuel depot. However, there are, and always will be, bits of things in the tanks. It gets there from opening the lid when the fuel is delivered, things coming loose in the holding tanks, water condensation inside the tanks, and whatever gets into your own fuel tank in your vehicle. The job of the filter is to strain this out before it gets to your injectors or carburetor and clog things up. After a while your filter gets full of this stuff and gets clogged up. Your engine gets starved for fuel and your vehicle starts pinging and getting worse gas mileage. Finally your engine won't run and your fuel pump ends up burning out. If you change your fuel filter periodically you end up saving not only gas, but also costly repairs. How important is fuel filter change?
I have a GM mechanic friend who tells me to replace the fuel filter every year. He said they're getting so many more injector problems than they used to. I also have the good quality fuel system cleaner done every 30,000 miles. I had an injector replaced once. Now I do more preventitive maintenance.
    fuel filters do get dirty...

and there very easy to replace and do need replacing.
Yes you need to get one. Even if the gas is perfect theres a chance of getting something in your tank just when you pump your gas. If the pump has a piece of sand on it and you place the pump in the gas tank. Then theres a piece of sand in your filter.
I usually change mine about every six months. It probably doesn't need it that often but I like to make sure it stays clean. Really the only time you have to change it is when you feel your car lagging or it feels like you don't have as much power as you usually do.
REALLY, it ads life to your care and improves fuel economy and power
mid stream of pumping stop and let a drop or two come out look at the color.
Once your fuel filter gets dirty you're car won't run correctly. There usually is some amount of trash in gas and over time it accumulates in your gas tank.
The fuel filter being changed is very important. A dirty filter is a non-working filter; meaning dirt (imagine all the old gunk that has built up being pushed through)is getting through. As far as the quality of gas, there are some gas stations around here that water down their gas (they do this and lower their gas prices). This watered down gas burns very VERY fast. Not everyone has good quality.
I use to be a mechanic we would see cars that never changed them and all of a sudden they wanted it changed. Well when you wait a while to change it then do it there is a chance your pump may go out. The reason for it to go out is it is use to working harder then you change your filter, it is use to the hard work so it keeps pumping hard then burns out.
It is as important as your air, oil or any other item that improves the performance of your vehicle will in turn add to it's longevity and to your safety.

How do i change the fuel filter on a 2002 Mountaineer AWD 4.0L?

I've located the filter on the passenger side frame rail in front of the fuel tank and behind a plastic shroud. Is there some sort of special tool I need to remove the lines and is there a need to disconnect the computer and/or battery? How do i change the fuel filter on a 2002 Mountaineer AWD 4.0L?
Yes, you need a special tool. They can be bought at your local auto parts store and are specifically for Ford car and truck fuel line connections. The tool slips over the line, and you push it into the end of the connection. the tool stretches the spring inside the line connection and allows you to remove the line. No need to disconnect the battery/

Where is the fuel filter on my 89 jeep wrangler and how do I change it?

I just bought a 1989 jeep wrangler and wanted to do some basic maintenance on it, besides changing the fuel filter and oil, what are some other cheap things I can do? ThanksWhere is the fuel filter on my 89 jeep wrangler and how do I change it?
It is tucked under/next to the frame rail under the driver side door. You'll need to remove a plate and loosen the holding bracket to free the filter up before you can get at the hoses. Be sure to release any pressure on the fuel system by cracking a hose clamp on the filter. My 90' 2.5L is not fuel injected so not much pressure, but I still had a squirt of fuel. Have a pan and some rags handy as some fuel spill is inevitable. Loosen the clamps and remove the old filter. Replace with new and be sure to install in the right direction.

dodge 3/4 tonHow to change fuel filter on 2007 6.7 cummins diesel?
The fuel filter is located on the driver's side of the engine. It should look like this

    https://genosgarage.com/images/MOP518341

You will have to remove the engine sight shield from the engine-

    http://z.about.com/d/trucks/1/0/k/2/1/cu

which is the thing with the oil dipstick going through it. Then remove the bolt that holds the dipstick tube to the intake tube for a little extra clearance (it's tight in there)

Place a suitable receptacle to catch fuel and turn the drain valve on the fuel filter counterclockwise and drain filter assembly. Disconnect the small electrical connector from the fuel filter. This is the water-in-fuel sensor. Then take a large band wrench like this

    http://images.orgill.com/200x200/6178644

and turn the fuel filter counterclockwise to remove. Install new o-ring to new filter and reverse the process to install. Remember to swap the fuel drain tube to the new filter.

Also, work with a cool engine so as not to burn yourself on the hot EGR valve and coolant hoses (they're right in front there). Access to the filter is a little restricted so I usually will have my right arm under the intake tube and my left over. It may take a little time, but the $$ you save instead of taking it to a shop is worth it.How to change fuel filter on 2007 6.7 cummins diesel?
Spin off the fuel bowl cap and remove the old filter. When you replace the filter, don't forget to put the new O-ring on! Tighten the cap. Start the engine to create pressure and look for leaks. If no leaks are found, you are good to go and you saved yourself about $75-$100 in the process.
Grab hold of it and screw it off. Fill a new filter with diesel and screw it back on.

How do you change the fuel filter on 2000 Pontiac Bonneville ssei?

I need to change the fuel filter and I would like to do it myself. Is it possible or is it simple? What tools do I need? How do I change it? Thank you all for answers in advance. How do you change the fuel filter on 2000 Pontiac Bonneville ssei?
On that model it is under your driver side rear wheel. It's pretty easy to change if your not in a cold climate. Make sure you use wd-40 and soak it the night before so it comes of easy. Make sure you don't strip the fuel line while taking the filter out. It might be easier to have someone else do it for you if you live in a cold climate area. They run about 30 dollars at a parts store so they are pretty cheap. If you need step by step details go to this website and go to the drivetrain section. www.regalgs.orgHow do you change the fuel filter on 2000 Pontiac Bonneville ssei?
If the filter is under the hood you can do the job yourself.

Disconnect the + cable from the battery.

    Wear safety glasses.

Wipe the old filter and the fuel lines around it to remove any dirt etc.

Have a few rags available for some spillage. With the car off the fuel line is not under pressure. You will need at least 2 wrenches to loosen the flare nuts leading ';in'; and ';out'; of the filter.

Loosen and remove both fuel lines.

The fuel filter may be held in place as well with a clamp and you will need to remove the filter form this ';holder';.

If possible depending on how the holder is designed it may be easier to reconnect the new filter and it's fuel lines before re-installing it into the holder. Be mindful of he new gaskets that may be included with the ne filter and be sure that the old gaskets are not still in place on the end of the fuel lines.

Re-install, tighten up, and double check your work.

Wipe up any mess possible left over from the fuel, allow it to sit a few minutes before connecting the battery back up.

Check work again, test start the car by turning the key on, wit 5 seconds to allow the fuel pump in the gas tank to apply fuel pressure then engage the starter.

It may not catch right away as the inside of the new filter is dry so you may have to repeat the previous starting step.

If you have any doubts, hit the local library and photocopy a page from a repair manual for you car regarding fuel filter replacement.

Good luck and no smoking during this job. :)

You can usually leave the bracket in place, just pull the filter out. On the one end, you'll need a flare nut wrench to keep from rounding the fitting, and another wrench to hold the filter. Probably a 20mm. The other end is a horse-shoe clip you pull out, and then pull the line straight off the filter. Helps to twist it a little first (axially). Make sure you have a new O-ring on that end when you put it back together, and check for leaks when you're done. How to change fuel filter?
The fuel filter is next to the gas tank, above the rear axle assembly. I doubt you will be able to get to it without a lift or ramps if you are a do it yourselfer. You can buy the filter yourself for under ten dollars. There are two clips that hold the filter on. I would just buy the filter and take it to a shop and pay the half hour labor to have it installed, so figure 40-60 dollars depending where you live.
gm vehicles usually have the in-line fuel filter on the drivers side just under the vehicle, on my 04 gmc is attached right on the fuel tank with a plastic bracket, should be no more than 6 or 7 bucks at an auto parts store, very easy to change, just de-press the grey buttons on each side of the fuel connection and it should pop off, just make sure all pressure is released before doing this or else you might get a face full of gasoline.... best way is to let the car sit overnight and replace the filter before starting that engine
it should be about the same place my olds. is. on the drivers side, back by the rear tire, along the body. its not real hard to change. you need to relese the pressure off the tank first, then you will need a line wrench to loosen the lines from the filter.
They are generally in line under the rocker panel around the driver door. if you have the tools its usually pretty easy but I have done a few that were really hard. Filters are usually less then 20 bucks

I have a 1988 Dodge Dakota that I changed the fuel filter on a few weeks ago. There was no valve to turn off. The fuel filter is located on the drivers side under the body about half way down the truck. I had a pan under it when I pulled it off to collect the gas, and make sure you keep your face away when you pull it off, but it was only a small amount of fuel that came out, enough to soak up with a rag. Hope this helps. How do you change a fuel filter on a 1991 dodge Dakota?
The valve they are talking about is to release the fuel line pressure, you cant turn it off, it is for safety purposes and is located under the hood on the fuel injection rail. If you loosen the filter-located like the other man said, under the truck inside the frame rail- you can't miss it. WEAR EYE PROTECTION, loosen it up, let the pressure bleed off, takes a few seconds, then finish removing the filter, reinstall new one and go!

1st of all, disconnect the battery cable %26amp; remember to relieve all pressure from the fuel system. Assuming that you have a 3.1L, then disconnect the quick-connect fitting from the in-line pipe filter. Install with a new o-ring in the same position.

After installed, turn the ignition to on for about 2 seconds, off for about 10 seconds, %26amp; then back to on. Inspect for any fuel leaks. How do you change a fuel filter on a 1999 Chevy Malibu?
It is located under a cap on the drivers side of the engine behind the exhaust manifold. Use a 32 mm (1 1/4 in) socket on the hex on the top of the oil filter cap, or an oil filter wrench on the outside diameter of the oil filter cap to remove. Do NOT use pliers or a wrench as damage will result.

how to replace a fuel filter on a 1986 monte carlo? Any help I am posting this for my husband and he is outside working on the car right now please help! How to change a fuel filter on a 1986 monte carlo?
That car should have a 305 V8 with a carburetor, which then would most likely be a Rochester Quadrajet. On the front of the carb, where the fuel line goes in, there is a hollow part that the fuel filter is inside of. At least if it hasn't been replaced with a different one, usually somewhere in the fuel line, between the fuel pump and the carb. The back side of that part will be a hex head, to put a wrench on, usually 1 inch size. That part should be held with a wrench while the fuel line is disconnected from the front, then unscrew that part from the carb. Be careful putting it back on, that the threads don't get crossed, or that it is over-tightened, as they do strip out fairly easy. The paper filter inside goes with the end that has an opening in it towards the fuel line side. Oh, also, there's a spring that goes behind it. That is to say, put that in towards the carb, before the filter. How to change a fuel filter on a 1986 monte carlo?

How do you change the fuel filter on a 2002 Ford Explorer?

Specifically, what steps need to be taken to reduce pressure from fuel system? How do you change the fuel filter on a 2002 Ford Explorer?
Yours is a nightmare and needs to be done preferably by a experienced person.

If you still want to tackle it, you can either disconnect the fuse/relay that powers the fuel pump and start the vehicle till it runs out of gas, or on almost all of them, their is a schrader valve (like a tire valve) on the fuel rail under the plastic cover on top of the motor.. it uses two torx fasteners near the oil filler cap

take the cover off the schrader and depress the valve till all fuel is gone.

Jack up and put jack stands under the vehicle on right side, the fuel filter is under a cover, just behind the right exhaust the cover has two bolts that hold it up (there may be a few more covering some covers) but the fuel filter has two clips that use a fuel line tool (available at the national chain stores like autozone and Napa)to remove.

it pulls out of it's holder.and just reassemble and cycle the key on and off a couple of times to inspect for leaks then start and recheck for leaks.

But IMO, this fuel filter and the one on my old f-150 are the worst ones and is worth paying a professional mechanic for the heartacheHow do you change the fuel filter on a 2002 Ford Explorer?

the fuel filter should be under the right side (when you sit in the driver seat). You will see two metal tubes go into a larger metal tube. The large one is your fuel filter. Get two line wrenches to fit the two nuts and loosen the nuts. Put a bucket under it because there is going to be residual fuel in the line when you disconect it. Take out the old one and tighten the new one in. Replace any brackets that held the old filter in. It may take a second for your car to start afterwards because the lines need to be primed again. Hope that helps. How do I change a fuel filter on a 2000 Ford Windstar LX?
FORD FUEL FILTER REQUIRE A SPECIAL TOOL TO REMOVE THE PLASTIC LOCKS AT EACH END OF THE FILTER. OTHERWISE YOU CAN DAMAGE THEM. THEY ARE THE ONLY THING THAT HOLD IT TOGETHER SO THERE NO LEAK.

JACK UP THE VEHICLE AND USE SAFETY STANDS. TAKE SPECIAL TOOL AND DEPRESS THE LOCK. THERE WILL A SMALL AMOUNT OF GAS COMING OUT. IT IS THE PRES SUE IN THE FUEL LINE. SO NO SMOKING IN THE AREA. THE OTHER END COME A PART THE SAME WAY. TO INSTALL THE NEW FILTER. PRESS THE LINE INTO THE FILTER. yOU SHOULD HEAR A CLICK. tEST BY TRYING TO PUT THE OUT OF THE FILTER. tHE OTHER END GO THE SAME WAY. IT IS INSTALLED. THIS IMPORTANT! tURN THE KEY ON FIVE OR SIX TIMES. tHIS BUILD THE PRESSURE UP IN THE FUEL LINE. tHEN START THE VEHICLE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE FILTER. IF THERE LEAKS THEN CUT THE ENGINE OFF. THE LINES IS NOT ALL THE WAY IN THE FILTER. AND REPEAT THE START UP. tHERE SHOULD BE NO LEAKS AT ALL.
there is a fuse in the fuse panel... pull the fuse out for the fuel pump relay and then start the engine... let it run until it dies on it's own to take the pressure out of the lines... the fuel filter should be located on the drivers side between the back of the drivers door and the rear tire.... undo the strap holding the filter in place... ford has a ';quick disconnect'; fitting on their filters that take a special tool that can be bought at most parts stores - don't worry they aren't very expensive... that tool fits around the fuel line and slides into the end of the filter sometimes you have to press it in pretty firmly... this will release the lock that keeps the line from falling out... and then gently pull on the fuel line... if it hasn't been changed in several years it can be a real pain in the butt to get to release... do the other side the same way and then push the ends of the fuel line on to the new filter and reattach the strap around the filter... re-install the fuse and turn the key to the on position.... be sure to check for leaks.... hope this helps and good luck with it

They're pretty easy but it takes a special tool. You'll need a fuel line quick disconnect tool. You can buy them at any parts store. I like the round plastic ones personally but there's a few different kinds. Press the tool on the fuel filter and push it into the line. Push the line onto the filter as far as you can and then pull it off. It may take a little elbow grease. Some release very easy and some can be a pain. Release the fuel tank pressure first by lossening the gas cap.

Jack up the rear of the vehicle, or raise it up on a lift. The fuel filter is located rearward of the fuel tank, but forward of the right/rear wheel. It's always best to replace with OEM filter. At $9.74 (part number FG-986-B from Ford), price shouldn't be an issue. The following are the steps for removal and installation.

    Disconnect the evaporative emission pipe.

Remove the fuel filter outlet pipe.

Disconnect the fuel filter inlet pipe.

Remove the 8mm bolt securing the fuel filter and bracket to the body of the vehicle.

    Remove the fuel filter.

    Remove the 7mm bolt.

    Slide out the fuel filter.

    Installation

NOTE: Observe the direction of flow arrow.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Hope this helps. Can anyone point me to a link on how to change the fuel filter on my Ford Focus?
Fuel filters are different sizes, but the one you have can be blown backward with high pressure air- and re-installed.

The round filter uses two pressure fittings that only need be unscrewed. The filter is on the side of the frame between the

rear tank and the front seats.

Replace it or blow it out- most likely it is not a problem- they only need replacing if someone dumped sugar in your tank.

check the fuel line that is connected to the fuel filter it might not be connected right or u just have to give it some gas what u need to do is just turn the key on a few times then try to start i had to do that with my 2002 ford escort just a few days ago make sure there is no gas leaking out of the filter also make sure that the filter is not backwards it might not be letting gas through if it is backwards GOOD LUCK :)How to change a fuel filter on a 2004 F-350 diesel dully?
More than likely the fuel filter on the framerail wasn't properly installed, since it is an absolute pain to access, especially if it's a 4x4, causing the fuel supply valve inside the HFCM not to open to allow to fuel to travel to the secondary filter on the top of the engine.

I work at jiffy lube, and if im not mistaken, you have a canister fuel filter near the middle of the engine on top. Im not 100% sure, but i think thats where it is. If that is what you have, just unscrew the top of the plastic lid, replace the round gasket(should come wiith the new filter, and reinstall. I hope this is of use.
The lower fuel filter housing must be screwed all the way in or it won't start. There are 2 fuel filters on a 6.0 L. engine
check filter right way round sounds daft but it is easy to put it on wrong way round and make sure you bleed fuel through otherwise it just wont suck the fuel up the pipe as it is lazy like a lot of ford components

It does not have to be empty. Just remove the fuel cap to depressurize it so it does not spray all over the place. Some fuel will spill though no matter what you do.
pull fuel pump fuse let motor run till it stalls

thatll depressurize it can change it anytime
If you have to ask these questions, you should go to a mechanic; unless you want to clean to gene pool.
you don,t have to empty it just take the pressure off of it. the way i do it on my 88 oldsmobile i just take the cap off.

Take a piece of wire and bend a hook on one end. Use the hook to get a hold of the gas line in the tank and pull it gently to the fill hole. The filter will come off the end of the hose. Put on the new filter and drop it back into the fill hole. Done.

How to change a fuel filter in a 1998 honda civic ex?

i know how to change it but hoiw do i turn off the fuel pump so know fuel comes out?How to change a fuel filter in a 1998 honda civic ex?
Here's how Honda service manuals say to relieve the fuel pressure

    1) Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery

    negative terminal.

    2) Remove the fuel fill cap.

3)Use a box end wrench on the 12 mm banjo bolt at

the fuel filter while holding the fuel filter with another

    wrench.

    4) Place a rag or shop towel over the 12 mm banjo bolt.

    5) Slowly loosen the 12 mm banjo bolt one complete

    turn.

The fuel pressure will push the fuel out of the loosend fitting and onto the rag. You must relieve the pressure before the fuel filter can be removed.

Another way to do it safely is to pull the main relay out of the connector and crank the engine over for about 15 seconds. The main relay controls the fuel pump and the ignition so the car won't start and the fuel pump wont' run but cranking it over should open the injectors to vent some of the pressure that is in the system. The main relay is located under the right side of the dash between the side of the glove box and the side of the car. You'll probably still have some residual pressure in the line but the fuel pump won't run with the relay out.

hope that answers your questionHow to change a fuel filter in a 1998 honda civic ex?
you need a haynes manual trust me its so worth it! it tells you every thing you need to know about your car.
if you know where the filter is then just take out the old one, hang the hose higher than the fuel tank and the most important, don`t turn the key into switch/acc position, take note that even if the fuel pump is not running there will always be something that will come out of the hose.

I did it on my Maxima 92, and it was easy.. just look up for the filter. It's usually behind the motor, near the windshield. Once you know where it is, disconect the hose from both sides of the filter with a screwdriver and place the new one. tight them well, but not overtightened.

-(The filter has an out and an intake flow, make sure you don't reverse those when placing the new one).

-(The hose will have a certain gasoline pressure if your car uses a gas pump, so be careful with your eyes).

-(When you have the old one out, blow through it from the same way gasoline flows and see if it's blocked. Blow the new one too so you can see the difference. If the old one was kind of blocked or dirty, but it wasn't the problem of your car, at least you replaced a not so good filter).

Nobody warranties that's gonna be problem.

But if you wanna go ahead and do it I wish you good luck. How do i change the fuel filter on a 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis?
Q- follow the fuel lines from the tank it will take you to the filter, but, do you have a mechanical pump or an electric pump? if you have an electric one have some one get in and turn the key into the run position, the spot the key goes back to after you start the car. open the fuel tank, like your putting gas in, and listen for a low volume whine. if that is present then find the filter, if it's not present then replace the fuel pump.

Make sure you have some fresh fuel to put in the filter before reinstalling it, as you don't want to have any/much air in the system. And use a couple of binder clips to pinch the ends of the hoses so fuel doesn't spill everywhere. Remember gravity ....

How do i start my diesel truck after changing fuel filter?

i have a 1998 dodge ram 2500 diesel. i changed the fuel filter yesterday and then it wouldnt start. i filled the fuel filter canister with diesel but i know i still have some air in the lines that isnt coming out and it still wont start. what can i do to solve this problem? How do i start my diesel truck after changing fuel filter?
bleed the injectersHow do i start my diesel truck after changing fuel filter?
on my 2500 Chev diesel I have a primer that I pump 6-7 times to prime (get the air out) after I change fuel filters
Rob if there is air still in the fuel line you will ned to bleed it out. Make sure your fuel filter is filled all the way to the top with diesel. Then there will be a fuel line that runs into the fuel pump. Crack the line open about a half a turn. Once you do that have someone roll the engine over and over. This will let the air bleed out of the fuel lines. Keep rolling the engine over until the engine fires off. Once it fires off close the fuel line off while it is running. hope this answers you question
If the above answer doesn't work.crack the fuel lines one at a time at the injector and crank it over to get the air out.helps to have a battery charger connected and don't crank allot so your starter doesn't overheat.ase tech
The above answer is the correct way for you to get all the air out. But..... if it is cold where you are, and you dont feel like breaking lines loose try this method that I have used on my 2000 Cummins. Fill the filter completely, turn the key to the on position, wait for the fuel pump to quit running, bump the key forward real quick, the fuel pump will run again for 8-10 seconds. Do this 2 or 3 times and then try to start. If it wont start do it again. This has worked for me everytime I change my filter.Sometimes I have to do it twice, but, once is usually enough.
you may need to refill the filter bowl with diesel. take the cap off carefully, add diesel, about 2/3 full and replace the filter cap. try starting. you may have to do this a couple times. also check your hpop (high pressure oil pump) for oil level. it is on the top front of motor. remove the fill plug and make sure oil is within 1'; of top. you need this full as it provides oil pressure to open the fuel injectors. excessive cranking can drain it.

i'm guessing that the truck ran fine until you changed the fuel filter. when changing try to remove slowly and let fuel drain from old filter back into filter bowl and when putting new filter in do this slowly too so as to keep from spilling fuel out of bowl.
find the bleeder valve on the injector pump turn the key on don't start it and the fuel pump should bleed itself

How do I know when it is time to change my fuel filter?

I recently purchased a 98 ford windstar. sometimes when I start it up it idles really rough and occasionally dies. when I am stopped (in gear) and I give it a little gas, the tackometer goes up, and then down under 500 rpms and the oil light flickers. it runs fine once I get moving, it's just when I am stopped or going really slow. I was going to put fuel injector cleaner in, but I figured I would check the fule filter too. is there any way to tell if it needs to be replaced? How do I know when it is time to change my fuel filter?
i would give this baby a complette tune up air filter pcv valve a gas filter plugs and wires and cap and then you know what you got going on under the hood . plus your transmission might need flushed unless you have a record of the last flush .How do I know when it is time to change my fuel filter?
Since you don't know the mileage on the fuel filter a good gauge is power under load. If you are accelerating and it misses or does not have power that is usually the fuel filter. Because the engine is starving for gas. What you are describing is not fuel filter.
but a filter doesnt cost much.. so do it if you think it needs it. I agree with the guy above/below idk.. eather way
Check the maintenance record on your Windstar. If it still has the original fuel filter on it then have it replaced. If you do replace it, DO NOT use fuel injector cleaner on it until you've had a chance to run a full tank of gas through that filter -- injector cleaner can damage brand new fuel filters. From personal experience I can tell you that I follow my father's advice and have had my fuel filter replaced in every vehicle I've driven every 50,000 miles and have never had a problem. Some people may say that's overkill, but it's not that expensive to change out a fuel filter and a clogged fuel filter can leave you stranded on the side of the road somewhere, so why take the chance?
    Good answer LesterM

try and put a new air filter in it it may surprise you

Under the car near fuel tank. Its recommended to release fuel system pressure before disconnecting the fuel lines. You can do this by removing the fuel pump fuse/relay or disconnecting the fuel pump and starting the engine and running it till it dies. The fuel system is under approx 40 psi even with the engine off. Just disconnecting this line at the fuel filter before doing so can result in fuel spraying in your face. I would recommend having a professional doing the repair if you are not exp in auto repairs.Where is the fuel filter on a1993 Cutlass Supreme? How do you change the fuel filter?
Follow ur fuel line from ur gas tank to ur motor....You will see a cylinder like object. Usually it's close to ur gas tank on cars like these. You might want to change your air filter and plugs/wires.
I agree with the other poster that this isn't really a DIY job anymore because of the fuel pressure. The spray represents a fire hazard should there be an ignition source nearby and the age of the car indicates to me a potential for the lines in and out to be corroded and require some expert technique in removal.

I'm trying to change the Fuel filter on my 1999 pontiac sunfire?

There is a little cup with clips on either side holding my fuel filter in. My manual said to squeeze the clips while pushing the filter in, then pull the filter out. When I squeezed the clips, they broke. How do I remove my fuel filter now and do I need those clips for the new filter to be held in properly?I'm trying to change the Fuel filter on my 1999 pontiac sunfire?
you probably did it as the manual suggested, but they still broke. The plastic they make these clips out of isn't very good quality. Depending on the filter you buy to replace the old one, it should come with clips that you can use as a replacement. I know from experience that Fram and Puralator filters both do. The best way to get the old filter out is to take a small screwdriver and carefully, without doing any more damage to the cup, finish prying out the old clip and slide the filter out. The new one that comes with the filter should work just fine to hold the filter in. Hope this helps!I'm trying to change the Fuel filter on my 1999 pontiac sunfire?
    you need a new filter
You will have to buy the special tool for that will release the plastic clip.
yes you need those clips, thats what holds the fuel filter to the frame. get plastic electrical wire ties to wire to the frame
I just squeeze the 2 clips together with a pair on needle nose pliers and pull it off, the new filter will have a new clip with it.

I know someone out there knows, thanks in advance%26amp;How to change a fuel filter on a 83 caprice classic 305?
you have to take a wrench and hold the metal housing that the line goes into, and take a small wrench to loosen the line. may have to loosen tighten, loosen tighten to free up the threads. if its not budging soak it with some penatrating oil. its not metric wrench sizes. How to change a fuel filter on a 83 caprice classic 305?
You will need a 1 inch wrench to back up the filter housing and a 5/8 inch flare nut wrench for the line. Hold the filter housing still while you remove the line with the line wrench, then remove the filter housing with the 1 inch wrench. Be careful to take care of the threads on the Q-jet and don't twist the line. Make sure the spring goes in under the filter and the white nylon ring stays on the housing. Don't over torque the housing. The filter is a few bucks.
your suppose to take the line off first then just use a cresent wrench or a box end wrench to unscrew it. i changed several of them when i had a 78 pontiac.

i own a shop and this one should be the one that screws in the the carburetor, right where the fuel line connect to,you disconnect the line and then use the right size wrench and remove it,be real careful and don't put the housing back in crooked they will strip out real easy, and use a little thread sealer tape on it,this will help keep it from leaking,re-connect the line, and that's about it,your done,i would remove the battery cable also, just to be safe about it,good luck with it.
find the fuel line to the filter and change , from the gas tank
I am asuming that you have a rochester 2bbl carb if that is the case follow the fuel line up to the front of carb there you will find a hex head fitting. get a tube line wrench of the appropriate size back it off and pull the line gently out of the carb. there you will see the fuel filter and a spring. I recomend changing both.

our local Wal-Mart auto service does oil changes for around $20. I don't know about the fuel filter, tho'. Where you are located may offer different rates than we can tell you on here. How much it will cost for oil and fuel filter change service?
They usually replace the oil filter with an oil change. A fuel filter I believe is around 12 bucks (I could be wrong) but idk how much to put it on.
    $80-$100
    Under 75 dollars
That's a loaded question ---- it all depends on where you live, some states have higher oil recovery tax than others and the cost of living has a lot to do with the charges you will be billed; however, it should run you not more than $40.00 for both oil and fuel filters changed out with lube.
depends is change filter original than cost 40 to 80

i play for my car $40 , but am not US
Jiffy lube is about $ 30, but if you have a aaa card you can get 10% off, thanks
look it up online to see how to do it yourself. Honestly it is idiot proof and it will save you 50%. No joke. Go to Wal-Mart look up your make model and year of your vehicle and get the supplies and do it yourself. You could probably save a couple hundred bucks every year by doing it yourself.

you need a wrench to take off the filter and you can use the same wrench for both sides even though one goes one side and the other one goes the other. and put a new filter up and tie it up.
might have quick disconnect - need special tool -buy the plastic set $5 or so.
that one is not that hard at all. i did one to day at work. it does require a release tool though. you slide that into the line and it will come off of the filter pretty easily.

How do I change the fuel filter on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier?

I need to know where the filter is located and if it's feasible to change it myself on level ground. How do I change the fuel filter on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier?
On your 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L SFI , the Fuel Filter is located:

Under vehicle, center, below rear seating area, rear passenger side of fuel tank, mounted in fuel line

Crawl under this location and see how accessible it is. But when you disconnect the lines, gas spurts out all over the place unless you first relieve the fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel injection rail on top of the engine. Unscrew the schrader valve cap and with safety glasses and rag, push down the valve pin (just like on a tire valve) to let some gas out. Careful of the fire hazard. How do I change the fuel filter on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier?
I have a 99 sunfire and I have changed mine on the ground. If the cars are the same, which they usally are, It is located just behind the rear axle. Chances are though, if you don't have a kit to take off the quick lock, you will be spending a nice amount of time down there.

How do I change the fuel filter on my Scooter?

My I have a MC-54-250B Roketa scooter or you could just say a clone of the Honda Reflex. Well its been less than a week and it has died on me. I can't start it. The dealer says it is possibly the fuel filter and to check that out. Does anyone know how to get to the fuel filter on that scooter? I have spent hours trying to find it.How do I change the fuel filter on my Scooter?
That model doesn't have a fuel filter.

Most common problem with new bikes is a clogged jet in the carburetor.

Bikes are run at the factory and fluids are drained before shipping.

The carburetors never get fully drained.

What little gas that's left in the carb goes bad and clogs the jets, if not fully drained before the customer takes possession.

Bring it back to where you bought it and have them get the bike running properly - it's their responsibility to sell working products.

Or dis-assemble the carburetor yourself, remove and clean the jets - hold them up to the light - you should be able to see through it.How do I change the fuel filter on my Scooter?
Take it back to the dealer and have them fix it....If your not a motorcycle mechanic, you can cause more damage, so just let them fix it.

It's more detailed, and you don't have the correct tools for the job.

6.6 Datamax turbo diesel. Fuel filter gage fuel filter life gage always says 100%. I think it's broke.

How often should this be changed? What are indicators it needs to be changed?

Thanks in advance. How often do you change the fuel filter on a diesel engine?
ide say every 30k miles if your running halfway decent fuel.

but remember to drain your water out of the filter once a month ESPECIALLY in winter. water collects in diesel, and if the seperator isnt drained it will carry over into the engine. Water does not compress, and youll potentially do bigtime damage to the engine. How often do you change the fuel filter on a diesel engine?
You will feel a noticable loss in power, then it will actually slow down. Depending on the size of the filter you can get 15 thousand miles, that's the recommended interval says Chevy, good fuel quality and the age of the tank will have a factor as well.
